One of my favorite things on this planet is french press coffee. Yes, I love regular old coffee, but french press? Well, it speaks to my soul.
French Press is a special way of preparing coffee, and it's my absolute favorite weekend treat. Every weekend, my husband prepare the kettle, takes out the french press, and begins the process of grinding fresh beans. It's the highlight of my week, and I can get a little cross if he sleeps in too late for my liking. 😂
Of course, I can make french press coffee too, but there is just something about when he makes it especially for me. We follow the exact same method, yet his is always richer, sweeter, and has zero bitterness. Ahh, I'm getting excited just thinking about it.
Finding a Solution for Leftover Coffee
During the week, when I'm writing out a lot of these blog posts, I need some serious caffeine. Drip coffee does it for me in the morning, but sometimes I just crave that French press flavor. And so I cave, grinding the beans, heating the kettle, preparing the coffee. Ahhh. So good. Not quite as good as my husband's, but still delightfully good.
Since I like to limit my caffeine in the afternoons, I can't possibly drink 2 full mugs of coffee, and so I have leftovers. That's perfectly fine by me, since a delicious iced coffee the following day is just what the doctor ordered.
Naturally Sweetened Coffee
The predicament that I've always faced is this: how does one enjoy coffee, sans white sugar?
Coffee has been a sort of last stand for me when it comes to how I sweeten my delicious cup of java. Its long been difficult for me to make a health-conscious switch when it comes to my beloved coffee. For a long time, I was completely sugar free and using stevia as my sweetener. That was a particularly difficult time (for many reasons), since I just could not stand my coffee sweetened with stevia. I actually gave up weekday coffee during that time of my life, suffering through long shift work without any caffeine to be had. On the weekends, I enjoyed a well sweetened cup of coffee.
Now, I'm dedicated to choosing natural sweeteners and this has been the most freeing time of my life. I'm choosing whole, natural foods that taste great. I don't have to buy anything special, and can find all of my food at the grocery store and the farmer's market if need be. I also happen to truly enjoy my food once again. I'm able to embrace it and savor it, rather than fear it. That's an important distinction.
Honey in Coffee
And now, I enjoy coffee without restriction. My day-to-day, run-of-the-mill-cup-of-joe is unsweetened, with cream to taste. I finally found a delicious coffee that can be enjoyed without sweetener, and I couldn't be happier! But on those special afternoons, when I have a little bit of leftover french press coffee sitting in a mason jar in my fridge? You better believe that I make this delightful Honey Sweetened Coffee Frappe.
I never thought I would like honey in coffee, since the flavor of honey can be a little on the strong side. Boy, was I wrong. Not only is honey in coffee adequate, it's a delight to be enjoyed. The strong flavor of the honey leans into the thick, rich French press coffee and comes out tasting like pure caffeinated gold. In this recipe, since we're using cold coffee, the benefits of raw honey are abundant. When you add honey to freshly brewed, super hot coffee, most of the benefits are destroyed. Not so with cold coffee.
Can I Use Regular Coffee?
Yes, you can! Keep in mind that you absolutely should use french press if you can, but if you only have access to a drip coffee maker, that's totally fine. You can use leftover cold coffee in this delicious honey sweetened coffee frappe. You may need to add more honey, so ensure you taste and adjust the sweetness as desired.
How to Store Leftover Coffee
I keep my leftover French press coffee ready to go by pouring into a glass pint jar. Once it cools completely, I add a lid and put it in the fridge. As long as you use your coffee within a few days, you're good to go. I like to use any leftover coffee the following day for maximum freshness and flavor, but it's still very good several days later.
Can I Use Hot Coffee?
Unfortunately not. Hot coffee is going to melt the ice too quickly, meaning you won't get that frappe texture. It's better to plan ahead to have cold coffee.
If you want to use hot coffee, you can make a basic iced coffee. Just pour your leftover coffee over a tumbler full of ice, sweeten with honey or maple syrup to taste, and add cream. This is a delicious summer treat that is an absolute cinch to make. The hot coffee will melt the ice cubes, and the drink will gradually cool. Don't skimp on those ice cubes though! When I say a tumbler full, I mean it!
What Do I Need to Make a Honey Sweetened Coffee Frappe?
- Leftover Coffee: I prefer to use leftover french press coffee, but any cold leftover coffee will do.
- Whole Milk: This adds a source of protein, as well as richness. I like to have my honey coffee frappe as a sort of snack mid-afternoon, so this helps it satiate me a little more. If you're dairy free, you can try substituting your favorite nut milk.
- Cocoa Powder: A little touch of chocolate makes everything better, no?
- Honey: Of course, delicious honey. You can use a standard honey, or raw honey in this recipe. Since the coffee is cold, this is a great way to get the benefits of raw honey into your body!
- Mineral Salt: A touch of salt always must accompany the sweet. Just a pinch.
- Ice Cubes: I like to use 6-8 ice cubes in my frappe. This ensures it is cold and iced, but also drinkable.
Equipment You May Need:
- French Press: If you don't already have a french press, I highly recommend getting one! Once you have french press coffee, you will never want to go back. This stainless steel one is next on my list.
- Blender: You definitely need a blender to make sure you crush the ice. I have this Ninja blender and I really like it! It does a great job of crushing ice, and it's really affordable.
